I wrote this article in January 2009 to help bloggers choose the best free or low-cost blogging service from the dizzying array of options available online. I published it that same month on my old personal technology blog, TechKathy.com, using the WordPress content management system (CMS).
I spent about a week researching nine services, opening accounts at each, and testing their basic functionality, including the ease with which a user can choose a theme, integrate with social media accounts, and post text, photos, and videos.
After gathering this information, I wrote a brief synopsis of each blogging service (using Associated Press style guidelines), and I also revealed which service I chose for myself and the logic behind my decision.
